ammoncontact - new birth

6 months after the release of the ammoncontact album comes this 9 track 35 minute ep. what prompted this quick turnaround ? probably the arrival of fabians new born, as he then realised that music would be taking a back seat while his new life settled into a different regime. having said that the new family addition is proudly displayed on the cover, so i guess the kid is going to have to get used to leftfield music being a part of his/her life. and the ep ? well, like the album, it's clean slick minimal hip hop based grooves and some light instrumentation. sometimes totally wonderful with a lovely wobbly bass line that makes the world flow ('omniverses 1'), and sometimes a little more off the wall - for example 'futuro' where cutup vocals, real world noise and car horns add to the machine funk. as before, the ammoncontact groove is an acquired taste as their music can come over as a rather dry clinical style, but a few more spins and the subtle nuances begin to work wonders, and, is that the buzzer noise from 80's saturday night highlight 'catchphrase' i can hear embedded within the clatterfunk beat of 'a satellites return' ? probably not, but let me keep that thought while i enjoy the track. i did have to hit the stop button on the final 8 minute jazzathon 'temple jam', which just doesn't do anything for me, but as this is dropped on at the end then the previous 8 tracks of strange samples, real live instrumentation, and clean beats can be enjoyed with minimal hassle.
