ammoncontact - one in an infinity of ways

an interesting release from this los angeles duo (carlos nino, fabian ammon) which goes well with the recent rainstick orchestra album - another ninjatune release. not overly dynamic or insistent as its a somewhat subtle beast. but, there is something of worth contained within the 40 minutes that keeps making me drop this in the player. laidback machine driven beats, a sprinkling of jazz elements from time to time, lots of bongos, neptunes styled organ loops, and on the final track an old school rap.

the album flows as one complete track with some overlaps and sonic references being recalled throughout. there are moments of complete gorgeousness hidden throughout. For example there's the acoustic bassline that drops in on 'healing vibrations', the big fat beat subsection of 'keepintime', the neptunes styled broken synthetics of 'through the moon', and best of all the addictive bottom ended groove of 'fun is for funky'. the 3 part epic ('wu woomp woomp', 'wu wu woomp' and the finale of 'good life to groove') in the centre of the album overstretches itself a little, but luckily its not long before we get to the fabulous 'love letters', mournful strings and strange percussions make this come over as a welcome bedfellow to the recent homelife album.

while its not going to get a party pumped up, or a quiet gathering chilled, the album provides a welcome respite from the usual suspects and for anyone who likes their hip hop predominantly instrumental and a little freaky then this album if given a little time will reap rewards aplenty.
