being 747 - health and safety
while the rest of the world relive their 80s funked up synth pop dreams, thankfully, there is still a corner of leeds where classic indie pop music is the holy grail which doesn't require any need to crack any codes to understand and love to the extreme. yes, the world of wrath records continues to be ignored by the scene makers, tis their loss, as this second album by being 747 proves that wonderfully original music that references musty corners of the rock-n-roll archives can be made within tight budgets wrapped up in weird cover art and still be worthy of love and attention from all of 10 or so hardcore listeners.
i fully expect in 20 years or so, that mojo (or its bastard offspring of the day) will do a full and thorough feature on the wrath label releases, and when that time comes, this album with its mix of deviant pop and real world lyrical fun, will be hailed as a lost classic. the vocals by dave cooke still provide the manic connection to julian cope, but the music is rooted in off the wall indie rock, so there are fairground organs, fall-type guitars, straightforward love songs, and all manner of excellence thrown into the background for those of you with headphones.
the fact that the a lot of the music is provided by the morricone bros from the much misunderstood scaramanga six, will come as no surprise, as they have a way with a pumped up guitar lick, horn section and general sonic chaos. however, amongst the interband jokes, there are songs that really hit the spot, 'microlite', the previously released, 'diy prescriptions' and the fantastic 'the retribution' (featuring vocals by emma from galitza).
basically, skip the latest nme sanctioned guitar toting young whippersnappers, and check out the real reason why postal region ls6 is still very much part of this particular reviewers blood.
cracking stuff.
