luke vibert - yoseph
having released several albums under different names and styles and labels at last luke gets to the well established warp to release his homage to the acid house sound of 87/88. a perfect label for this album methinks. luke has taken the same sounds from way back and strapped them onto these fresh new beats. not 4/4 to the floor, but a lot funkier. old school analogue acid squiggles abound. deepness oozes along with a rich nostalgia but still sounding like a new variety of dance music. lovely. this is not unfriendly tuneless techno as in parts it is very listenable.
the dark cover designed by warp regulars, the designers republic, has a red circle on top of a choclate brown. why surely this is the wrong colour .. a great big tdr sanctioned yellow smiley would be far more suitable ?
along with the two tracks off the recent 12" synthax/iloveacid the highlight for me is 'freaktimebaby' which deviates from the rest of the style of the lp with its deep dubby bassline and a vocal loop that catches the attention and raises the enjoyment factor. superb.
countdown .. vocoder added to the standard synth loops is fun enough but not special. several tracks have titles indicating that this lp is not a 100% serious outting 'noktup', 'stan d'infamy' ho ho. with a plethora of 80's synths sounds. no doubt certain folks know exactly which keyboard makes these sounds .. i dont have those details (nor do i want them!), but the mental throwback that the sounds induced was weird enough .. thomas dolby meets lfo. admiteedly the lp has a uniform appeal, if you dont like the sounds then the lp is not going to sit, but for those who like the fat analogue sinewave producers to funky grooves, then this lp is rather fun.
in parts strangely addicive.
just like acid should be.
