best of northern soul, dance floor killers etc etc. there are soooo many compilations of this kind of lost in vaults 60's soul, it's almost impossible to gauge what's worthy of your pocket money. luckily, for once, emi come to the lazy listeners rescue with their hi-quality, low-budget $tateside compilation series, 'talcum soul', where a whole manner of 60's soul excellence is on offer, in this simple but very lovingly packaged release. spread over these 27 tracks are names that many will know, helen shapiro, homer banks (whose own $tateside compilation is well worth tracking down), and the wonderful o'jays. of course, however there are many many names that are completely new, and other than their appearance here will probably remain so, but for their featured 2.5 minutes they rule my little world, as there is seriously nothing within this 66 minutes that's anywhere near bad. as per the genre dictates, horn sections do their syncopated thing behind the phil spector styled arrangments, some girls holla, whereas others smooch, some guys get all deep down and funky, whereas others enlist more a more harmonious approach.
in fact, this is a perfect groove filled soundtrack to a fine bottle of red wine (or two!) and some rather lovely pasta.
