coldplay - clocks
you all know this by now surely. once again a damn fine piece of coldplays attempt at world domination. quiet piano, haunting melody and a strong vocal performance from chris martin. despite my best efforts this is still very enjoyable stuff. even though i still can get through the whole lp in one sitting
athlete - el salvador
opening track from their forthcoming album. a classic athlete track. insanely melodic and catchy with a chorus to sing in the shower. barbed lyrics seem to be questioning their record label, indicating the bands strength with wordplay. love it. lots.
nylon pylon - pushin' (12" remixes)
new band, i hear they support the music last year. i can definitely hear a connection between the two bands. the remixes are by jon carter and playgroup and both wobble the speaker cones to their maximum safety levels. imagine the pumping style of underworld to a guitar line lifted from a stone roses lost classic. no idea if the band have the tqalent to last the course over a whole album, but definitely one to watch and listen.
the star spangles - stay away from me
second single from this lot. at least the title can be typed out far easier this time ! as for the noise .. tis a basic ramones style rant over trashy dolls guitars with a hint of early days boomtown rats chorus. as much as i would love to hate it due to the obvious manufactured aspect of the band, tommy volume on guitar - yeah right, etc .. the song has a way of getting under your skin and lodging there for quite a while. growing respect maybe ? time will tell ..
inme - neptune
over the course of the lp which i tried to enjoy, the vocals just grated too much, obviously though i am out step here, as the lp hit the top 40 charts and the gangs last single hit the right spots aswell. so it should not distress the band too much when i say that i still dont get it. the guitars and the basis is spot on, tis all down to the voice ..
209 - take me i'm yours
i unfairly didn't give much time to this bands previous ep, the excellently monikored 'bitch' which was 3 tracks of intense hard rockin'hip-hoppin nu metal that gave fred durst a run for his money.
this time round though the 3 versions of the title track show the breadth of the bands styles. the 'normal' version is as full on as you would expect from a band that play in the nu-metal genre, but this time round there is a lot more focus on the song. a heavy melody section sits comfortably next to the massive chunky rifferama. superb. the band are showing real progression as they obviously gain more confidence with the vocals. ok - nothing too radical or new, but for those that want the red hot chilli peppers mixed with korn and a dash of public enemy then look no further.
where things are differnt are the remixes. second version removes all the noise/heaviness and supplements them with a mantronix/electro-boog-a-loo beatbox which for us old schoolers is totally wild and fresh - seriously interesting. the ep's last version again takes the track into a new area, acoustic guitars and proper singing revealing the strong melody the song holds. i aint going to ignore this lot again ..
