the lodger - grown ups
a summary : leeds indie pop at its best.
the jigsaw pieces are easily identified, but that
doesn’t detract from the pleasures provided.
after all, how can you not fall in love with a
band that match wedding present/buzzcock
styled guitars and boo radleys harmonies.
of course the majority of the album consists of
bed sitter land boy-girl misadventures, but in this age where people get most
of their aural kicks from a fucking tinnitus inducing ringtone, its
wonderful to hear a band just be so twee and youthful with their hooks and
choruses. where else would you hear such simple pleasures on an album in
2007 :
‘and now you in the phonebox, checking out
i’m fine’
a phonebox ! who uses thoses these days ? do they
still work/exist ?
even the most broke of students (the core audience
for this album surely !), will have a parental hand-me-down brick of
technology, but when the above line is dropped into kicking sand it
all makes perfect sense.
the songs are played straight up with little
concession to the demands of a unique selling point, but when the
songs are as spot on as the haircut 100 stylings of getting
special with its girl-boy harmonies, you just melt and are swept away by
music made the way it used to be back in 1986.
the inclusion of favourite singles let
her go and, my advise is on loan seals my love, everything makes
sense when the trumpet hits giving a metal throwback to the last providers of
a trumpet enhanced classic reward, by the teardrop explodes. so
all in all, across 14 tracks in 40 minutes, you are provided with a chunk of
good old fashioned indie pop that cares not about having any electro makeover,
nor attaching itself to any nme sanctioned advertising brand.
instead its just a fine album that will please
anyone who gives the band a place in their home.
