rage : the soundtrack
subtitled 'music from and inspired by the film west coast style'.
this is a compilation of old and new takes on west usa punk. something that i know little about. the names are familiar though, tsol, the adolescents, flipper, circle jerks for example. some of it is still incredibly relevant despite the fact that some of these tracks were recorded over 20 years ago!
some of the tracks are excellent, tsol opening track, and the superbly named 'brats in batallions' by the adolescents, whereas as others are purely interesting to the genres diehards.
the cd includes some video footage as an added bonus to the hard thrashy sounds, but for me the most interesting aspect is that gitane demone's new track 'solitary war' is rather special. the reason being that said person was previously in christian death, and, having lived in leeds 6 for many years i was surrounded by imagery from christian death album covers. needless to say i avoided all contact with the sounds based purely on the imagery/associated gothness. and now years later i hear a fine track, i check the credits .. ouch. preconceptions blown away. cool. just like the compilation really.
all in all an interesting eye opener, especially for anyone who believes that usa punk rock means sum41/good charlottes !
