orange can - engine room ep, home burns

not much detail available here so a quick simple review.

the ep is 5 tracks over 22 minutes .. but sounds like one long meandering track. there are very ambient sections and more guitars based sections, calming vocal treatments with singing voices being phased over the basic instrumentation. there are no massive productions techniques employed here, just a very warm glow emanating from the atmosphere. at one point towards the end though there is almost a funky madchester feel to the bass line/guitars, a little more of that and i would be digging out my 'rave on' ep.

overall a very impressive ep, and well worth hunting down.

the lp gives the game away a bit more. more developed (ie a bit longer) so the penny drops where the guys in the band have been getting their audio kicks from over the years.

this is a lo-fi version of early pink floyd.

there is the deft sonic trickery, strung out guitar lines, the melodious harmonies over sweet innocent tunes all like syd barret used to excel in.

once this mental image hits it is very difficult to shift, which does indicate that the band dont have any thing too new to provide, but as the world has recently rediscovered garage rock its nice to see that there are some bands prepared to work a bit harder than just thrash out the basic 3 chords ad infinitum.

the lp is nice and very pleasant and wont offend the neighbours, lets hope the lead singer doesn't suffer the same neurosis as syd.
