mum - dusk log
4 track ep. some old some new. available on 10" vinyl, and a 3" cd.
taking a couple of tracks off their recent lp and adding a couple more this 18 minute ep is a perfect mini time capsule of strange scratchy ambience and serenity. the old world real instruments are once again caressed into making strangle new sounds which are then processed via modern studio methods to create something very different, yet somehow maintaining the wisdom of age within the sounds. at times unsettling, others completely gorgeous sometimes at the same time.
mainly an instrumental affair, and even when the vocals do come in ('this nothing ..') they are so mellow and laid back in the mix they are hardly noticeable amongst the sonic palette of musical toy noises distant harmonicas, sea shanty accordions, yet their presence is essential. third track is from the lp, whereas last track , the mysteriously names 'books of fog' continues with the weird noises, abstract disconnected melodies and is generally rather unsettling that should be avoided late at night if you want a good settled nights sleep, as the atmosphere is akin to a creepy thriller where you never see the monster, but you can hear and sense the presence of evil.
in other words, a perfect end to the ep then
