money mark - push the button
avoided this for years as i never really understood where m was coming from - but decided to try it out when recently saw it cheap-ish. and wow ! expected strange hip-hop based jams/cut-n-paste stuff - instead top quality pop-rock songs ranging from elvis costello, velvet underground all the way to best-of prince pop/dance songs - stunning once the impact of the variety of the songs has passed ..
a whole record collection in 50-odd minutes
well this is very different to marks previous effort (see above).
gone are the summer vibes pop songs, the vocals, the mish mash of styles, no samples, no scratch dj's making it groove as is normal with this style of music
instead this is a full on live band - straight up live acid jazz that would make james taylor quartet proud, mark is obviously making moves on film soundtrack contracts.
having said that once the shock has passed it has to be admitted that all the tracks have a vibrancy and a flow that is highly enjoyable, just dont go expecting the pop thrills as previously.
in fact several tracks are downright funky and superb, 'another day to love you' with its samba style rhythm and excellent horn section - which appear all over a couple of the standout tracks. this is a summer party - all we need now is the sun back .. this lp will suffice for quite a while.
( note : it has been brought to my attention that money mark never incorporates samples or scratch dj's. just wanted to make that straight !)
