meat beat manifesto - 99%, subliminal sandwich
the genuis that is jack dangers. how to classify - rock/dance/industrial/ambient, dub ?
mbm combine elements of all genres and put a menacing/brooding atmosphere to it. using vocal cut-ups real instruments, dub basslines. the earliest release i have 99% still sounds relevant today and its 10 years old ! prodigy have taken this as a blueprint for their sound (aggressive dance) and capitalised on it ad infinituum - to the degree that liam h. still plays 'radio babylon' in his dj sets - see madonna hi-brow set in brixton this year. the track unfortunately aint on 99% but this stuff is of the same ilk, with some amazing sounds, for example helter skelter almost rips the speakers apart just when the listener is complacent of what may be coming up..
after this i kind of lost touch with mbm
satyicon seemed to go in orbitals direction - cleaner/polished which wasn't really my thing. then after lengthy absence i found out about subliminal sandwich a double cd set that is stunning. disc1 has everything :raga skankin', full on big beat, dubbed up basslines , and all wrapped around a huge production in which every instrument is fighting for space. sounds like a mess - well it works wonderfully. top highlight for me is actually a cover version of lead asbestos - the original by world domination enterprises is a grotty 2.5 minutes guitar racket, whereas mbm have turned it into a brilliant call-to-arms industrial rap. the 'songs' are held together by the (un)usual found voices which always drew me to cabaret voltaire so just add to the overall sense of drama.
the second cd is primarily improvised ambient-dub, haven't given this as much time as disc 1 pulls me back each time.
classic stuff.
