emetrex - wish me dead

second album via the seriously groovy label. according to the pr release the bands debut was a beautiful melancholy release. well something has obviously upset rick lescault since he released that, cos this is anything but a quiet easy album to chill out to. the duo of rick and dave have crafted a superb slab of stoner rock styled epics. featuring shoe gazing layers of noise, drawn out grooves, and lazy vocals, make several of these noise monsters come over as lost swervedriver b-sides, which also, in some cases recall the promise of early brmc releases, as well as touching on the fuzzed up dark pop of queens of the stone age. all of which is a fine rock and roll heritage to plunder, if you ask me.

while the album is a concise 35 minutes, there is so much to absorb here that this feels perfectly appropriate, as any more would dilute the excellence and probably tip the album into 'over staying its welcome' territory. so, from the opening 'i think the sun makes me move' with its manic over-the-top distorted guitar solo, to the cooler-than-thou laidback fuzz funk of 'hammer in my skull' (if the warlocks had ever made anything as downright heavy and melodic as this then they may have actually got the sales that the hype predicted), via a delicate drum machine, keyboards and acoustic guitars of 'secret parts', to the grand noise of 'molly hatchet', i know i have found my current provider of black leathered up, dirtied up, anti-keane music.

excellent stuff.
