duran duran - greatest - the sight and sound edition
compilations are being released to coincide with xmas tours, and this band are probably the best of the xmas office party singalong going. hurray the fun starts here.
now, i hated duran duran when they ruled the world in the 80's. their hair, their suits, their naff videos. i was a real music fan. it was all about madness for me, my cousin was a total durannie and so, i had to rebel against his choice of favourite band. then i grew up some more, forgot all about my snobbery, and forgot about duran duran. then recently new young bands (the bravery, and the killers) have started dropping in references to the birmingham new romantics , such weirdness in 2005.
so, when this compilation of all the hits and so much more, dropped through the letterbox, i was somewhat excited. my first duran duran record. you will all know the classics, you will whether you want to or not. so surely i don't have to describe their attempts at guitar dominated, slap bass infused synth pop, their pretty cringesome lyrics, and their desire to be as cool as roxy music.
of course, 19 tracks running for nearly 80 minutes is probably too much to handle in one sitting, but hey time has been kinder to this lot than i care to admit, and even i begin to warm to large elements of this. and for the value seekers, for that red wine fuelled saturday night, there is a slimline version of the recent 2 disc 'greatest' dvd package where all the stereotypical 80's videos are provided to make you smile/laugh/cry out loud.
excellent fun. which is surely what pop music should be all about.
