boykillboy - civilian
debut album from this recently tipped for the top gang of nme faves gets the big push. for the uninitiated, the music boykillboy (all one word - lower case - it'll never work) throw out to the world, is a continuation of the currently hot groove of indie popped up guitars, synth stabs and euphoric hands in the air choruses. while they don't bring anything new to the table, putting this album on while getting on with life is perfectly acceptable. of course, there are going to be those that will just chuck out phrases such as 'stop gap album for those awaiting second albums by the killers, bloc party and we are scientists', but, i for one would never be so lazy. would i ? well maybe - just don't forget to add in references to the editors.
all of which makes 'civilian' the perfect cross pollination album in the world ever. possibly.
of course, there are some fine examples of colour by number indie rock-n-pop, such as the album opener, 'back again', and the fans fave, 'suzie' and the gloriously pumped up 'on and on', just that over the whole album the lack in sonic variety becomes somewhat weary, but hey, this is an album for the open air summer season, for radio one listeners who like to rock out in a fairly generic indie fashion, and more importantly, for people to enjoy.
so kill the hate, turn up the volume, put this on and care not that the band are riding the wave of modern indie demands as there are going to be a lot of happy people when the band hit the festival circuit in a few weeks time.
i reckon this band could indeed be worthy to check out.
