medicine8 - ironstylings
originally called medicine until they were advised of a setup in america, the remonikored medicine8 released their debut album last year to a world that didn't really know where to place this stuff anymore.
acid house. detroit techno. big beat. 90's classic rave.
lets mix all that up and see where it goes ..
from the opening blast of 'speaking music, f*cking music', to the close of 'ape dont kill ape' its obvious that the studio bods behind this dance noise are soaked in love for the music old and new.
several tracks refer to music either in the title of the track or within the vocal rumblings set to the pounding acid-techno woofer monsters, even namechecking several 70's rock gods. the music may be dance-techno - but they obviously respect the heritage of all forms of rock music.
each of the singles that were lifted from the album are standout tracks, 'capital rocka' and 'rock music pays off' follow the path of the chemical bros with the sonic foundation set in uptempo dance music, and, in the case of 'rock music' incorporates a well used vocal sample from a usa based shock jock looped to maximum effect - taking the ethos from pwei - 'sample it, loop it, f*ck it' perchance ?
the connection to the chem bros is obvious and an easy comparison, but i have to say i will go back to this album far more often that the bros's albums for one simple reason.
there are no star guest vocals. if i want to hear a damn fine uptempo acid tinged alternative dance album i am not interested in hearing special guest vocals from showbiz mates .. i just want sharp beats, crisp basslines and well placed samples and a vibe that gets the blood rushing, which i suspect the guys who made this understand. there are vocals from time to time this is not soulles machine music.. but they are spoken, and anonymous and dont detract from the excellent surrounding grooves..
exactly what the doctor ordered.
