second album where the previous samples and loops man has gone all acoustic, having renounced his previous style, fink appears to be getting a lot more love and recognition given that one of the album tracks, this is the thing, has already been heard by millions of people via a high profile advertising campaign.

also, this time around, the simple raw instrumentation has been given a widescreen production by lambs andy barlow.

to be honest, as much of this album is so simple and stripped back, it’s hard to figure out exactly what andy could have done. though the subtle strings and slide guitar on opener, troubles what you’re in are very chilling and special, and the delicate layered vocals that are dropped in from time to time are very special.

for an album that is so laid back, it’s actually a shame then that the best track happens to be the one that fink gives it the full band production. blueberry pancakes, has the addition of a more uptempo drum and bass foundation, along with a nice slab of post punk choppy guitar, making the 4 minutes stand out as an essential track to be given single release. very special stuff indeed.

the rest of the album doesn’t quite reach the same level of excellence again, but i am very aware that on a future hang over heavy sunday morning, this quiet album is going to become one of my very best friends as the sheer beauty of finks ruffed up sultry vocals and bruised acoustic guitar proves that the singer songwriter genre doesn’t have to be populated with total elton john sanctioned crap.
