solid steel presents - bonobo : it came from the sea
another instalment of the superb solid steel series. an internet radio station that somehow manages to continually prove just how tired and drab most mainstream radio airplay is by stretching the possibilities of the technology on offer as . for this release ninjatune have dragging in one their big names, bonobo, and asked him to provide another hour of laidback jazz head pleasantness, funked up beats, flutes and bongos.
unlike some of the other mixtapes in the series where a large factor of the enjoyment is the cut-n-paste, this mix is all about the track selection and smooth and easy segues from one to another, amongst which bonobo drops a few of his own classics, and, even an advert monster which you will all know! things start off nice and easy, and gradually builds up the heat, until things become very shaky shaky spinetastic (especially around bonobo's 'pick up' > flevans hey 'mr bundle').
of course, being bonobo there are some deviations into the jazz world which in the form of a full length player would make me hit the eject button, but these are matched against some mighty big beat action and nothing on this mix is as big and nasty as the awesome 'muchies', by the belgrade sound system. a totally wonderful combination of dancehall vocal and a bass thumping horn section which is followed by a rather fine charlie brown/snoopy 1960's piano loop that would make dj shadow squirm with delight of he had unearthed this.
as always, the joy of this type of mix is to just kickback, and let the flow of the beats and track selection guide and educate you. so, while this mix wanders into more chilled out areas than the other solid steel releases, you are still grabbing the cd to check exactly what it is that is making your head feel so good.
this is definitely one for the late night sessions.
