field music - write your own history
a companion release that sits alongside the sunderland bands debut album that was released last year to critical glory. comprising of 9 tracks in 25 minutes, these b-sides, unreleased extras, and non-album tracks, are indeed worthy of shelf life like the album proper. abiding by the bands own regulations in their structure, the songs are built up using the same sonic template as before, so the songs fit easily into the catalogue with their lovely simple pop music played by real people on real instruments (sounding like a right 'keep music real' campaigner !).
subsequently, these songs pay homage to all that is right about harmony rich pop music, with vocal harmonies, rich accents, delicate warm strings, and the central focus of the piano and acoustic guitar, but not in an epic coldplay manner, more like a downtempo late night session down your local with some very talented mates. whereas the album had a knack at twisting and turning the rhythm and chords to excess, these songs are played in a much more straightforward manner, and so actually are more enjoyable as a whole, making me look forward to their new stuff even more, as i am reliably informed (as you know, a good digger cant reveal sources) that the new stuff is fantastic, and on the strength of these 'throwaway' tracks who am i to disagree.
