psapp - do something wrong ep (melo17)

a duo comprising of carim clasmann and galia durant, both have interesting names and from this ep they make interesting sounds when teamed up in a recording studio on borrowed time. both are declared in the the press info as 'anoraks', well, i'm off down to lakeland and purchasing their entire autumn collection if it helps me make something as simply beautiful as this.

using sounds that eminate from musical toy boxes, they create a 3 minute piece of sugary electronic pop - 'calm down' which opens the 6 tracks with an instrumental setting and sweet pure vocals, making this a gorgeous starter which does exactly as the track title advises.

the rest of the ep returns to the same melody line at various times throughout but within subtley different type of settings .. track 2 'biskitt', for example, uses a similar pallette of sounds, but without the vocals. and very charming it is too. this then leads into 'pocket' which has more rhythmic clicks and whirs and a sensuous breathy cutup vocal snatches. imagine early art of noise experiments with aphex twins quieter parts and you may understand why this has been on constant rotation over the last couple of weeks.

next, there is the unsettling track 'dads breakdown' which has a 50's bbc voice describing a dream/event all set to an ambient soundtrack. again the melody line is familiar by now and so the spoken track is quite an interesting spin on the theme, especially when followed by 'infrared' which is a lovely simple acoustic guitar lead track with a voice that melts and soothes. subtle off kilter noises are apparent in the mix to dispel the obvious "girl+guitar=folk music" connections. the final track is an ambient finale, the calm after the non-storm. a mellow vibe which ends the 20 minutes in fine form.

once again melodic have found a very special release.

yet i feel sad. not enough people will hear this record.

those who do will understand my regret. this is just too gorgeous to go unloved.

do the right thing and soak this ep up. let it calm your soul.
