l.pierre and notes - ep

having released two very laidback albums for the rather lovely melodic label, l.pierre (yeah yeah - you surely know its him from that other band by now ?) turns up the tempo, finds an obscure wordsmith and lets rip for an almighty groove monster of a track. lead track 'i hate t-shirts that say 1977' is a superb blend of  library sampled strings, frenetic drum loops and the obvious declarations that notes hates a certain ironic t-shirt. great fun and one to file alongside the recent collaboration between that other electronic music meister who has teamed up with a rapper - four tet and percee p. must be something in the air, all these laid back noisemakers rediscovering the funk.

the other 2 tracks on the ep, hold back on the vocal front, but don't fall into the tired remix trap, or go back to sleep with the beat, instead, 'biblebash!'  combines fast-n-furious thin drum beats with emerson, lake and palmer styled church organ, and off kilter choral vocal chants, neither intimidating nor weird this track does have a simple but charming demo quality about it, admittedly, the track would not have been suitable for the album, so fits its status as an ep extra perfectly. finally, 'black disco vista' is a much more threatening electro track, uneasy melodies, harsh atmospheres, and scary noises are hurled at the listener in time with the pounding 4/4 beat, like some strange cast off by front 242, or nitzer ebb.

certainly not like the music on the mans albums that's for sure, but still a lot of fun, especially when the packaging is made to appear like a genuine homemade cd-r.
