ireallylovemusic meets huw from earth the Californian love dream
hello
hello.
love the noises.
ta!
the name of the band is a mouthful and a bugger to type out .. what’s it all about then ?
it’s out of a fascination with bands like jefferson airplane and crosby, stills, nash & young, and the art and ideals they represented. and it’s a reaction to all the ‘the’ bands: we have the ‘the’ second. wild!
b-side to the debut single ‘in the garden’ had the chant ‘fuck ozzy, fuck the queen, fuck the californian love dream’ - a particularly angry sounding distorted monster of a track : was this a reaction to ozzy joining in with last years royal garden party ?
i just couldn’t understand why our monarch was associating with an obvious hippy.
and if yes, why the anger aimed towards the mans new pantomime status ? is this a statement of disappointment that he has become all that is wrong with someone who used to be in black sabbath ?
i think i’m getting over it now. i do wish he’d do something useful though, like give his kids a good smack.
mentioning the sabbath – it’s obvious that you have listened to them a fair bit when deciding on the sonics of the band .. who else comes into the equation ?
i don’t think we ever decided on the sonics. but all the following for guitars/sounds/structure/lyrics: kiss, ride, loop, motorhead, my bloody valentine, thin lizzy, hawkwind, wire, pink floyd, saxon, robert wyatt, slayer, bob marley, aphex twin, boards of canada, moody blues, brian eno, beach boys, ken dodd.
how are earth different in todays clean polite rock world?
we have soul and know what ‘false metal’ means. one of us only washes his hair twice a week.
‘loudness is a force’ – do you use volume for a reason other than just to stun the audience into submission?
it feels good. but i wouldn’t want to be responsible for anyone’s submission. send me this audience for counselling straightaway!
‘porn star’ – 90 seconds. lazy b*stards, or something more to shortness of the track ?
i didn’t plan it. there was nowhere left for the song to go after that. saying that - if you took all the individual tracks on the tune and stuck them together it would probably go around the moon and earth, not once, not twice, but three times. i know there’s the sound of a sheep being loved somewhere amongst all the digital data, oh and the sound of hair being washed on a monday, and then a thursday. i think some bleating picked up on that waterproof microphone.
like clive langer did with madness’s one step beyond, were you ever tempted to just loop it twice ?
nah, we just left it to the ‘previous’ and ‘play’ buttons. i can get it in that dead bit on the end of a c90 (zappa’s 20 small cigars on the other).
the single was packaged with a sleazy silhouette of a woman in a provocative pose yet the lyrics are all about a fella .. why not a blokes silhouette then?
i thought it was a bloke. look at the crotch…is that normal?
in fact, about the packaging , all the images used avoid usual rock band standards ie no photo’s, no poses, thus avoiding the chance of fan recognition - a purposeful choice of the band – or are we to expect full exposure of the bands inherent beauty with the cover of the album ?
i hope so but it all depends on imminent dental work.
new single ‘girls fighting’ seems to continue with the theme of sleaze and naughtiness - is this an admission that you are into the cliched rock-n-roll lifestyle?
girls fighting is actually about the struggle. but to answer your question the band has a completely budget priced rock-n-roll lifestyle. personally i was sick a couple of weeks ago. i blame the blue tablets.
have you ever been the focus of a girl fight? or is this just a fantasy, role playing type of situation?
where i live it’s fairly common to see the prostitutes scrapping, when i moved here, before they got used to me walking by every day, they would stop and focus on me with hungry eyes in a ‘looking for business darling’ kind of way. does that make me a stud?
in truth- i am a regular referee of girl fights. several hard-bodies visit me nightly where i adjudicate. with my cock.
the opening bars of ‘girls fighting’ has a great gritty bluesy vibe – and sounds great. tightly produced, but still rough round the edges, are you users of all the modern studio tricks (ie computers) or, are you a basic live setup in the studio?
both: we love guitars and amps and drums and microphones but we’ll use what ever technology we need. we use a computer to record us playing live as a group. we have no rules.
several b-sides show a delicate acoustic side to the band .. how much of the album will be all mellow, is it a 50/50 split, or, were these tracks done as a reaction to the problems with finding a suitable drummer ?
at the moment butterfly girls is the gentlest song. we have a few drummer friends so not having a permanent drummer hasn’t caused a problem. many of the songs are written on a good old-fashioned acoustic guitar so it’s easy to strip them back to basics.
does the lp have a name, and when can we expect to see it being released?
no name decided. it should be out in the spring.
new single 'fighting girls' out soon
