dj yoda
the cut-n-paste maestro reveals some heavily guarded secrets of the not-so dark force.
were there any tracks that you wanted that just weren't allowed due to licencing restrictions ?
yes - loads! for "how to cut and paste: the 80s edition", i couldn't use anything by michael jackson, madonna or prince - which was upsetting to say the least!
is a mixtape like yours cost effective ? or do you view them purely as a skillzz showcase ?
both!
are you a vinyl cut-n-paster pure schooler or have you dabbled with the computers aspect at all ? as i know one person who believes that a happy days theme tune cut to hip-hop beat that you have done must be protools.
i try to keep it all as turntable-based as possible - only because computers scare me and i'm used to it that way. that happy days thing was a live mix on turntables!
do you tape a lot off tv/films for the extras you add to the mix or do you have access to some mightily extensive sound archives ?
again, a bit of both. i record anything i think is cool, and i have access to a whole bunch of library stuff as well.
humour. you are deffo on a one man mission. this makes your stuff a welcome change. where did this desire to bring humour into what is generally a very serious musical form come from ?
i've always found the funny side of hip-hop, and it confuses me how other people can't, especially in the uk. to be fair, not that many british hip-hop fans sell crack and tote guns in the ghetto, so it's entertainment, surely? the same as an arnold schwarzenegger film can be funny.
you work with dan greenpeace. who else would you like to collaborate with ?
a dream list? biz markie, dj q bert and johnny cash.
what next for dj yoda ?
i'm working on my first artist album - i.e. not a mixtape, all my own beats. slowly getting together tracks, working with different vocalists. it's good fun!
who/what is antidote ? a very lo-profile label, no website giving away free mp3's ? is this intentional ?
antidote is the record label that releases all my stuff, as well as having released material by madlib, prince paul, ugly duckling, steinski, etc. they have a website now - it's www.antidoterecords.co.uk.
the cover artwork/style you have used over vol1-3 has recently been lifted by mark ronson. are you pleased with the impact you have made on the mainstream ?
i didn't make that connection! i'm cool with mark ronson, and if they really were influenced by my covers then that's great!
had any emails from george lucas re using yoda ? or have you cleared all the legal rights ?
all strictly above board thank you very much.
and to finish some easy quickies ..
whats been your highlight for 2003 ?
djing at a huge festival in italy.
fave album of 2003 so far ?
probably outkast.
