dan curtin - shining ep

tracklisting : shining, tromp, shining in dub

another fine release on the ever impressive dust science label, this time around they have secured 3 tracks of pure pounding techno that makes the speakers bounce and shake. while not as melodic as i like my machine made noise, there is something rather fascinating about the hard stereo panning that dan has cut into the mix that makes the track spin around and draw you in irrespective of your wishes. as well as the fried-n-wired digital funk, there are cut up processed vocals adding a layer of discomfort to the groove. in a nice way, though. so by the end of the 6 minutes you will be dizzy, but totally compelled to flip the slab of black plastic to check out the rest. 'tromp' ups the tempo both in drum machine and sexual tension with more of those disconnected vocal loops declaring 'you get me hot'. strangely, considering the label connection, the shards of melody that are spliced in and out of the fucked up headspace actually recall aspects of cabaret voltaires output, which, as far as i'm concerned, is praise enough, so i'll stop there, but naturally the dub mix is not a reggae styled retake, but a more slimmed down take on the lead track, with splattering of melodic bleeps and old school clicks and ticks that almost makes you run to the bathroom to check up on your supply of vicks.

superb.
