lefties soul connection - skimming the skum
the more eagle eyed amongst you may have
spotted that in the tracklisting for the
pepe
deluxe mix i posted about yesterday, was mention of a cover version of
dj
shadows classic
organ donor by this lot from amsterdam.
to be honest, i hadn’t paid much attention to
this album, but when i heard the cover dropped in the mix, i remembered this
being in the pile, so dug it out and quickly realised that i had been missing
out on something quite special.
skimming the skum is the bands second
album, and hits the world at the right time with their brand of raw, untreated
instrumental soul-n-funk, given the ever increasing love for the retro-soul
perfection of sharon jones and the dap kings and the
revival of old fashioned soul music by chart killer amy winehouse and
her well connected producer chum, mark ronson both giving
funky soul a pop makeover.
recorded live and direct, the 12 tracks here have
a punch and urgency that would fit in perfectly with your $tateside
reissues, or the best part of the james taylor quartets back
catalogue before he went too up the acid jazz road.
hammond organs are given an proper hammering,
drums are mean and tight, while guitars are licked and wah wah’d to
perfection. no real need to get into each individual track as the raw funk groove
is the deal here, so if you get chance to see this band live over their
forthcoming festival appearances, i suspect you’re going to go home all hot
and sweaty with your head full of feet shuffling, smile inducing
riffs.
truly excellent stuff.
