hk 119 - pick me up
4 track debut release from a finnish woman who goes by the name 'hk 119', but in the real world her name is heidi kilpelainen, an artist who has attracted quite a few influential friends along the way SUCH AS bjork, AND alison goldfrapp. OBVIOUSLY WITH CONNECTIONS LIKE THESE IT COMES AS NO SURPRISE TO FIND THAT the music is hard edged electro with hk ranting about the glories of mobile communication, to such a degree that during the song there is a number given out. i dare you to phone it. i've seen the video of the song and i know the score, but more of that later. obviously with such cliched phrases as 'lets radiate baby', and 'are you ready for a brave new world' this stuff has to be taken with a massive pinch of salt.
the beats are hard and nasty, the synths do their industrial thing and generally the dominatrix demands by hk ('pick me up' indeed !) are matched well in their aural surroundings - you will submit, whether you want to or not. remixes come by dean honer and hk herself, where they extract the beat, cut up the vocal chants to maximum effect, and add a subtle rock element to the proceedings . the added bonus of 'last nation' has hk 119 battling with some serious hardcore synths denouncing how 'she worked in tv' operatically, while a manic distorted laughter keeps the atmosphere rather wired. it's a totally barking mad 3 minutes.
alongside the cd single they have sorted out a dvd version. its all rather low budget and will provide much laughter to those who enjoy the extras of life, but for the rest of normal society i warn you, the woman is scary. she lip syncs with such ferocity and in a manner that you begin to wonder if those type of mouth movements are possible without plastic surgery, all while wearing makeup that would creep out slipknot.
stick to the music is my advise, and even then be careful.
