dj yoda goes to the movies
is this a mixtape, a film, or what?
in fact it's both. comprising of a live show that renowned cut-n-paste artist, dj yoda, put on at a cinema in soho london the film gives the viewer the full experience of the show without having to put up with any hassle. like fellow traveller, strictly kev (who rescored the monkees classic 'head' movie), yoda has decided to further his mission on the decks, and use some new fangled technology gizmos to cut up movies and various visuals alongside his dj sets. so on the one hand it is a mixtape with a solid track selection of known hip hop funk, but at the same time there is a visual treat as scenes from the usual suspects of movie classics get the b-b-backwards and f-f-f-forwards treatment.
i will admit that in the cold light of day, watching various scenes from star wars, THE muppets, big trouble in little china, TO NAME BUT A SMALL SELECTION, being CONSTANTLY cut up into WIKKA-WIKKA-WIKKA snippets can become a little hard going to sit all the way through, but, i suspect that after an evening of liquid refreshment, this would make perfect sense. as there are some rather fun moments to be had, and of course the music is hugely enjoyable.
as well as the actual 'film', there is a rather fine interview with the man himself, involving a nice coat and some scene stealing penguins, an alternative view of the whole experience where you watch the movie clips on their own as opposed to the split screen version that shows yoda doing his tricks-n-treats.
doubt that this will be on the shelves of your local megabore, so check over the mans rather fab website. its cute, its very functional, and gives you an indication as to what to expect should you desire to check out the dvd.
