cassetteboy - mick's tape
spring has sprung, the mood is lighter and the sun has made an appearance once or twice. naturally it's now time wind down the windows, dig out those hip hop mix tapes and feel the funk. and as if the timing was planned, antitode return to the release schedule with their first release of 2005. however i should warn you. anyone who has followed the series ("gotta catch'em all") should be advised this one's different. a 'normal' mixtape involves some deft scratching, fine tunes and all manner of funky vibes. cassetteboy approaches things from a alternative angle. his style is basically to take tv documentaries, old classic comedies, car programs, and deftly rearrange the vocals in such a way that its downright bloody disgusting, full of self deprecation, sexual innuendo, and all manner of naughtiness, yup, it's the 6th form humour revival in modern digital cut--n-paste form, luckily for cassetteboy, the technology has moved on, meaning that the creation no longer requires him to use genuine old school tape decks and that trusted friend the 'pause' button as before, but the sonic manipulation on offer is still a thing of wonder.
luckily though spread amongst the filth are a few choice cuts to make the experience more palatable, including curtis mayfield, jaylib, mf doom, jehst, and an excellent piano funky riff from ramsey lewis. oh, and of course hylda baker and arthur mullard. yes - hmm.
this is a very british take on the cut-n-paste genre, anyone beyond these fine shores just will not get a lot of these cultural references, but hey, there ya go. it's not a long term classic by any means and shouldn't be played when in polite company, but for a few weeks this will make me chuckle and blush in equal amounts.
oh, and he's playing at glastonbury.
